Author Eileen Kennedy Brings Home and Family Into the World of Misfit Lane

Behind Welcome to Misfit Lane is a story that started much closer to home than most readers might expect.

Eileen Kennedy, a longtime medical professional and mother based in Maine, created the book alongside her own children, turning a family hobby into a full children’s story. The idea took shape over time, born out of shared imagination and a habit of finding humor in everyday moments.

That family influence shows up throughout the book. Misfit Lane is narrated by a cheerful neighbor who introduces readers to a cast built on real personality rather than perfection: a cat who refuses mornings, a grandmother who gets everyone moving, and a neighborhood full of characters getting ready for the Boo Tiara Festival. The humor is gentle, the cast is a little odd, and none of that is treated as a flaw.

“Being a mother and a grandmother shaped this book as much as anything else,” said a representative for the author. “It’s really a family project first, and a children’s book second.”

Kennedy’s professional background also plays a quiet role in the book’s underlying message. Years working in a caregiving field gave her a close view of how children grow, struggle, and find their way, something reflected in the story’s easy acceptance of every character, no matter how different they seem.

Welcome to Misfit Lane is available now, with a second book, Festive Gala, continuing the story of Boo Tera.
